BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - With the final month of the regular season underway, St. Olaf remains the only volleyball program undefeated in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a 3-0 record against league opponent. Fourteen matches are on the schedule this week with 11 of them counting towards the conference standings.
Bethel fell three spots to No. 24 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Top 25 Poll, released on October 5. Gustavus landed just outside the Top 25, receiving 136 points in the balloting, while Augsburg tallied 11 votes this week.
The next AVCA Poll is due to be released on Tuesday, October 12.
Augsburg senior middle blocker Jade Fullerton is tied for seventh in NCAA Division III with 67 total blocks this season.
Gustavus senior defensive specialist Hailey Embacher has collected the ninth-most digs in D-III this season with 344.
Saint Benedict junior outside hitter Gabby Heying is ninth in NCAA Division III this season with an average of 12.04 attacks per set.
Saint Mary's sophomore outside hitter Ciarra McNally posted 32 kills against Carleton on 9/15, the most by a player in any five-set Division III match this season. Her 73 attacks in that match are tied for the tenth-most in a five-set Division III match this season.
St. Scholastica junior defensive specialist Alcia Draper leads all of NCAA Division III this season with an average of 7.54 digs per set. Draper posted 42 digs against Saint Benedict on 10/2, the fourth-most in any four-set Division III match this season.
St. Scholastica junior outside hitter Jessica Remer ranks fifth in NCAA Division III with an average of 12.92 attacks per set this season.
AROUND THE MIAC
Augsburg sophomore defensive specialist Angel Khang had 50 digs in a pair of matches last week. On 9/29, she had 21 digs in a three-set sweep of No. 19-ranked UW-Stevens Point, and on 10/1, she had a career-best 29 digs in a five-set loss at Hamline.
Bethel junior opposite Kirstin Cotter recorded a match-high 17 kills against Saint Benedict on 9/29. It was her eighth consecutive match with at least 10 kills.
Carleton junior outside hitter Jancyn Appel hit 0.415 and averaged 3.09 kills and 0.91 blocks per set during the Knights' 2-1 week. She had 16 kills and a season-high-tying six blocks in Carleton's come-from-behind five-set win at Martin Luther on 9/29. Appel hit .500 with 10 kills against Gustavus on 10/1 and added eight kills and three blocks in a sweep of Luther on 10/2.
Concordia sophomore outside hitter Peyton Selle led the Cobbers with a career-high 10 kills and a 0.389 hitting percentage in a sweep of Crown on 10/5.
Gustavus senior outside hitter Kate Holtan helped the Gusties defeat Carleton and nationally-ranked Bethel in straight sets this past weekend. Holtan started the weekend conference series against the Knights with 17 kills, five service aces, and a hitting efficiency of 0.625. She continued her momentum at Bethel with 19 kills, a hitting efficiency of 0.405, and a passing rating of 2.4.
Hamline junior middle hitter Rachel Rettmann registered 18 kills and five blocks in a 3-2 win over Augsburg on 10/1. She went on to tally seven blocks in a four-set loss to St. Olaf on 10/2. Rettmann finished the week averaging 2.86 kills per set with a total of 16 blocks.
Macalester first-year outside hitter Adisa Preston collected eight kills and seven digs in a three-set loss to St. Olaf on 10/1. She also added a block-assist in the match.
Saint Benedict junior outside hitter Gabby Heying tallied 17 kills and 12 digs in a four-set loss to St. Scholastica on 10/2. Heying has posted a kill-dig double-double in four consecutive matches.
St. Catherine first-year outside hitter Lexie Petrick tallied 51 digs in two matches last week with a career-best 35 in a five-set match at Concordia on 10/1. The back row specialist averaged 6.38 digs per set while collecting three service aces and 16 kills for the Wildcats.
Saint Mary's senior libero DeJaye Baab compiled a team-high 41 digs in back-to-back conference wins over St. Scholastica and St. Catherine last weekend. Baab opened the week with a season-high 29-dig performance in SMU's 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on 10/1, before adding 12 digs in the Cardinals' 3-0 sweep of St. Catherine on 10/2. Along with her 41 digs, Baab also added five assists and two aces.
St. Olaf junior defensive specialist Selena Rodriguez recorded 38 digs and added 13 assists and six aces in a 2-1 week that included two conference victories. The junior had 16 digs to go with eight assists and five aces in a four-set road win at Hamline on 10/2 to help St. Olaf hand the Pipers their first MIAC loss of the season. On 10/1, Rodriguez had 13 digs and four assists in a home sweep of Macalester.
St. Scholastica junior defensive specialist Alcia Draper averaged 8.45 digs per set in three matches for the Saints last week. In a pair of conference matches, Draper had 33 digs in four sets at Saint Mary's on Friday and then a season-high 42 digs in a four-set victory at Saint Benedict on Saturday.
