Tommies, Oles to meet in MIAC Volleyball Playoff Championship

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The 2019 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Volleyball Playoff Championship match is set, as St. Olaf held off Saint Benedict and St. Thomas rallied to defeat Augsburg in an exciting semifinal round of action on Thursday night.

No. 1 St. Thomas battled back from two sets down to top No. 4 Augsburg, 3-2, while No. 2 St. Olaf handled No. 3 Saint Benedict, 3-1. The Tommies will host the Oles in the MIAC Playoff Championship match at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night. St. Thomas won the 2019 regular season matchup with St. Olaf, 3-1, on September 18.

St. Thomas rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to win three straight sets and punch a ticket to the MIAC Playoff Championship. First-year middle blocker Selena Levendoski led the way for the Toms with a match-high 17 kills, while setter Grace Anetipa posted a 48-assist, 18-dig double-double. Corrina Evans logged 11 kills and six total blocks for the Auggies. St. Thomas now returns to the MIAC Playoff Championship for the first time since 2017. The Tommies have appeared in 10 MIAC Playoff championships, winning six (2005, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013, and 2014).

For the first time in nearly a decade, St. Olaf is headed to the MIAC Volleyball Playoff Championship after defeating No. 3 seed Saint Benedict, 3-1, on Thursday night. Ole setter Lexi Wall recorded 63 assists in the match, the most by any Division III player in a four-set match this season, while outside hitter Lauren Rewers posted a career-high 28 kills and added 10 digs for her 13th double-double of the year to help propel St. Olaf to victory. Hunter Weiss led Saint Benedict with 13 kills and her sister, Madison Weiss, paced the team with a .360 hitting percentage. St. Olaf is back in the MIAC Playoff Championship match for the first time since winning it all in 2010. The Oles are 3-2 all-time in MIAC Playoff title matches, claiming championships in 2000, 2002, and 2010. 

The top-seeded Tommies will host the No. 2 Oles in St. Paul on Saturday night. The MIAC Playoff champion will receive the postseason championship plaque and the conference's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Tommies and Oles have met in the conference tournament eight times with each school winning four matches. St. Olaf defeated St. Thomas, 3-0, to win the 2002 MIAC Playoff title, marking the only previous championship match meeting between the two programs.
