MANKATO, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus College is headed to the NCAA Tournament after defeating the University of St. Thomas, 3-1, in the 2019 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Soccer Playoff Championship game in Mankato on Saturday.

The Gusties and Tommies each scored first-half goals to head into the halftime break with the score tied 1-1. Gustavus scored on a pair of unassisted goals in the second half to give the Gusties their MIAC-best seventh playoff championship and ensure a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

-St. Thomas forward Jacob Makela got the scoring started just before the 14-minute mark with his fifth goal of the season. Otis Anderson picked a good time for his first collegiate score, evening things out just before the half.
-Cole Schwartz scored his 23rd goal of the year off a rebound in the 72nd minute. It was his sixth game-winner of the year. Matt Gibbons took advantage of a breakaway and scored his ninth goal of the season with 1:17 left in the game to seal the victory.
-Gustavus goalkeeper Wesley Sanders made three saves in his 17th win of the year. St. Thomas' Troy Louwagie stopped six shots for the Tommies.

-Gustavus is now a perfect 7-0 in MIAC Playoff Championship games, having won in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2014, and now 2019. No other MIAC men's soccer program has won more than three playoff titles.
-With 23 goals on the year, Cole Schwartz now ranks second in NCAA Division III behind only Bethany Lutheran's Max Busch (25).
-The Gusties have now won five straight games and nine of their last ten heading into the NCAA Tournament.

-Gustavus received the MIAC Playoff championship plaque and the Conference's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. St. Thomas and the rest of the MIAC will eagerly await Selection Monday to see if the league sends any additional teams to the NCAA Tournament via at-large bids. The NCAA will announce the national tournament field during its annual selection show on Monday, November 11 at 12:30 p.m. CT.
