BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - League play got underway over the weekend for Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men's basketball teams. Three more conference games are scheduled for Tuesday night before teams head into the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Five non-conference games are on the docket for the next seven days with four more rounds of MIAC contests set to be played in December.

POLL TALK
Saint John's collected the most points of any team not ranked in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25 with 69 points in the preseason balloting. Saint Mary's also received votes with nine points in the balloting.

The first regular-season poll of the year is expected on Monday, November 29.


NATIONAL NOTABLES
Carleton sophomore guard Miles Frisch has an assist to turnover ratio of 7:1, tied for ninth-best in NCAA Division III this season.

Carleton junior guard Beck Page is shooting 66.7 percent from 3-point range this season, tied for the third-best clip in D-III.

Hamline first-year guard Tait Nelson ranks second in NCAA Division III with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 10:1.

Macalester sophomore guard Caleb Williams ranks fourth in Division III with 135 total points this season. He is tied for fifth in the nation with 50 field goals made.

St. Olaf senior guard Dominic Bledsoe is tied for fourth in D-III with an average of 4.0 steals per game this season.


AROUND THE MIAC
Augsburg junior guard Joe Palmer averaged 20.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 60.0 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from beyond the arc last week. He scored a team-high 21 points and recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds in a tight loss to UW-La Crosse on 11/17. He also scored 19 points and shot 63.6 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from deep in the Auggies' win over Hamline to open up MIAC play on 11/20.

Bethel sophomore forward Zach Doely tallied back-to-back double-double performances leading the Royals to a 1-1 week. Doely poured in what was a career-high 20 points against UW-Stevens Point on 11/17 before besting that mark with 22 against Gustavus on 11/20. He completed the double-double performances with 10 and 12 rebounds, respectively. For the week, Doely shot 73.9 percent from the field, going 17-of-23.

Carleton sophomore guard Alex Gibbens led four Knights in double figures in a 96-57 victory over Concordia on 11/17. Gibbens was 6-for-11 from the floor with 16 points, including a pair of threes.

Concordia junior guard Braeton Motschenbacher scored 15 points - all in the second half - to lead the Cobbers in a five-point loss to UW-Superior on 11/20. He also had five rebounds in the game.

Gustavus first-year forward Spencer Swanson played a key role in two Gustie wins last week against UW-River Falls (11/17) and Bethel (11/20). Swanson went 5-for-11 from the floor against the Falcons with 13 points and eight rebounds and went 6-for-8 from the field with 17 points against Royals. His seven straight points at Bethel were crucial for Gustavus to take a lead and win in the second half.

Hamline first-year guard Tait Nelson shot 8-of-20 from the field, scored 20 points, dished out three assists, and came away with three steals in an 81-74 overtime victory over Martin Luther on 11/17. He also had 13 points in a three-point loss to Augsburg on 11/20.

Macalester sophomore guard Caleb Williams has scored at least 20 points in four of the team's six games this season. He posted totals of 29, 28, and 25 points in the Scots' last three non-conference contests against UM-Morris (11/11), North Central (11/13), and Crown (11/17).

Saint John's senior guard Colton Codute collected 11 points and a career-high six steals in a 74-51 win at St. Scholastica to open MIAC play on 11/20. His six steals were the most by a Johnnie since Brady Bink had six against Hamline on 01/19/2008.

Saint Mary's sophomore forward Noah Frechette recorded a single-game career-high with 14 points against Macalester on 11/20. Frechette had previously tallied a then-career-best 10 points against Augustana on 11/16.

St. Olaf sophomore guard Connor Martin had a season-high 12 points, five rebounds, and a career-high seven assists off the bench to help the Oles to a 72-64 win over North Central on 11/17 for the team's third-straight win. The sophomore scored or assisted on 19 of the Oles' 26 points over the final 10:52 of the game and had eight points and six assists in the second half. He also added a pair of steals and one block, while only committing one turnover in 25 minutes on court.

St. Scholastica senior guard Nick Carlson led the Saints with 15 points against Saint John's on 11/20. Carlson scored all 15 points in the first half, accounting for nearly half of the team's 31 in the opening frame.
