Saint Mary's received the MIAC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament, while St. Thomas earned an at-large bid. The Cardinals defeated Aurora (15-3) in the opening round before falling in back-to-back games to Northwestern (3-1) and Johns Hopkins (7-2). St. Thomas defeated Scranton (8-4) and York (8-7) before losing to Pacific (10-1). The Tommies then won three straight elimination games against Chapman (4-3) and Pacific (7-4, 13-9) to advance on to the College World Series. UST won its first three games at the championship site, beating Adrian (7-5) and Washington-St. Louis (8-4, 6-4) to move on to the title game where the Tommies fell in back-to-back matchups with Salisbury (6-1, 4-2), ending the year as the national runner-up.

Regional and advance to the College World Series. In the CWS, the Tommies defeated Linfield (10-0) and Baldwin Wallace (5-4) before losing to UW-Whitewater (10-4) and Emory (10-7).

UST then defeated Marietta (3-1) and Cortland State (7-6) but was eliminated after losses to Wheaton-Mass. (13-9) and Marietta (5-0).

UST knocked off UW-Stevens Point (5-4), St. Scholastica (8-4), and UW-Stevens Point again (6-0) before topping the Oles to win the Regional. In the College World Series, St. Thomas defeated Chapman (9-1), Shenandoah (16-5), Carthage (3-1), and Wooster (6-4, 3-2) to win the NCAA Division III National Championship.

The Tommies lost to Marietta, 8-6, before bouncing back in Game 15 to win 8-4 in the national championship game.

St. Olaf opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Marian and bounced back to defeat Ripon (2-1) and Benedictine (14-3) before falling to the Tommies. St. Thomas moved on to the College World Series, defeating Emory (8-3) and SUNY-Cortland (8-3) before topping Chapman, 4-3, in 10 innings to win the NCAA Division III National Championship.
