MIAC spring sport postseason update

NCAA Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Between conference championships and NCAA Tournaments, spring sports teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) have stayed very busy in May.

Baseball
Bethel became the first MIAC baseball program since 2014 to sweep both the regular season and playoff championships when the Royals won the second conference tournament in program history on Saturday. On Monday morning, the MIAC champions learned their next assignment when the NCAA released its field for the 2022 Division III Baseball Tournament. The Royals are headed to St. Louis, Mo. this weekend as part of the four-team, double-elimination Webster University regional. Bethel (33-9) will take on Wooster (29-13) at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20, while host Webster (37-6) will square off with Crown (30-13) in the other regional matchup earlier in the day at 11:00 a.m.

Softball
The 2022 softball season will continue for MIAC regular season and playoff champion Bethel, which won a pair of games at home on Sunday to defeat Washington-St. Louis and secure a spot in the Super Regionals this coming weekend. The Royals went 4-1 in five NCAA Tournament games over the weekend, defeating Bethany Lutheran (5-1) on Friday, before dropping one to Washington-St. Louis (1-2) and bouncing back in an elimination game against Buena Vista (6-5) on Saturday. Bethel needed two wins against WashU on Sunday and the Royals got just that, defeating the Bears, 4-3, in 15 innings and sealing the deal with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh for a regional championship-clinching 6-5 victory in the winner-take-all game. Bethel will head to Mount Berry, Ga. for a best-of-three series of Super Regional games against No. 10-ranked Berry College this weekend. The first game is set for 1:00 p.m. CT on Friday, May 20, with the second scheduled for noon CT on Saturday and the if-necessary game to follow.

Saint Benedict wrapped up its 2022 season in the regional championship on Sunday. The Bennies had earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and were selected to host a regional for the first time ever. CSB went 2-2 in regional games, collecting a pair of 8-0 victories in elimination contests against Illinois Wesleyan and Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday. The Bennies lost to Nebraska Wesleyan, 4-0, on Friday afternoon and came into Sunday needing a pair of wins to keep the season alive before ultimately falling to Wartburg, 6-5, in the regional championship.
