WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University athletic director Brian Sisson handed over the reigns to the cross country and track and field programs on Thursday — and Jake Malm can't wait to hit the ground running.
"I'm extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity to be the head track and field and cross country coach at Saint Mary's University," said Malm, who has spent the last seven seasons as an assistant track and field coach at the University of Dubuque in Iowa, where his primary responsibility was coaching the Spartan throwers.
"This is a school and athletic department with a tremendous vision for the future, and I look forward to building a program that Saint Mary's will be proud of." he said.
"It is truly an exciting day for our cross country and track and field programs, our student-athletes, and the Saint Mary's and Cardinal athletics communities," said Sisson. "What Jake has been able to help build at the University of Dubuque has been incredible. His recruiting prowess and nationally renowned competitive accomplishments — combined with his attention to detail — is what stood out in the process.
"He is one of the great, up-and-coming coaches, and I look forward to having him as a member of the Cardinal family for years to come."
Under Malm's leadership, the University of Dubuque throwers quickly established a presence at the national level, leading the country in entries to the NCAA national championships over the last three years — including garnering a pair of national shot put champions.
Spartan throwers also dominated at the conference level under Malm, leading the American Rivers Conference (formerly the Iowa Conference) in scoring every year since 2016, while winning 10 of 12 throwing events in the 2019 Championships. As a team,
During his time at UD, Malm — a four-time USTFCCCA Assistant Coach of the Year — had 49 throwers qualify for the NCAA national championships and has coached 28 All-Americans. He was a part of the staff that helped lead the Spartans to their first men's track and field indoor conference championship in 2016 and its highest NCAA finish (12th) in 2018. The 2018 women's team also posted its highest conference finish (third) and posted a program-best ninth-place showing at the national championships in 2019.
As a student-athlete at the University of Minnesota, Malm competed in the javelin and was a member of three Big Ten Conference championship teams.
Malm — who, along with his coaching duties was also the UD recruiting coordinator — currently holds certifications from USATF (Level 2 Throws), USTFCCCA (Throwing Events, Strength and Conditioning), and the NSCA (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist). In 2016, Malm was invited to participate in the USATF Emerging Elite Coaches Camp.
What Others Are Saying About Coach Malm:
• Jake is an exceptional hire to lead the Saint Mary's cross country and track & field programs. He turned a non-existent throws program at Dubuque into the best in the nation. He's got a great understanding of all track and field events and athlete development. He'll be a persistent recruiter with the ability to identify the strengths of Saint Mary's to attract student-athletes; and the current athletes will love his straight-forward approach that will bring them together as a team and help them develop individually. He's definitely the best person equipped to grow the Saint Mary's cross country and track and field programs and I have no doubt he'll bring it success it's never seen before." — Rich Maleniak, head cross country/assistant track & field coach, University of Dubuque
• "Jake was instrumental in elevating our track and field program to back-to-back conference titles and Top 10 team finishes at the NCAA Championships. Off the track, he was the leader of our recruiting efforts and allowed us to connect with and build our family to the incredible 100 strong that it is now. More than anything, he has been a glowing role model for our team as a man of integrity, consistency, and resilience. His time and effort here is what pursuing excellence looks like. I am excited for him in his new role and grateful for all he has done for UDTFXC." — Chad Gunnelson, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, University of Dubuque
