2021 MIAC Football Championship

Championship Saturday: November 13, 2021

Information

The final week of the MIAC regular season will be "Championship Week." MIAC teams will be ranked 1-5 in each division based on the current season's in-division games only. Each team will then match up with the corresponding seed in the other division for a "playoff" game. The winner of the contest between the two divisional leaders will receive the MIAC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs.

In 2021, teams from the Skyline Division will host Championship Week.

Tiebreakers

Two-Team Tie:

  1. Head-to-head result between the two tied teams
  2. Winning percentage against all in-division opponents for the tied teams.
  3. Head-to-head winning percentage against in-division opponent(s) above the tied teams in descending rank order.
  4. Head-to-head winning percentage against in-division opponent(s) below the tied teams in descending rank order.
  5. Combined winning percentage versus all common non-divisional MIAC opponents.
  6. Cumulative winning percentage versus all MIAC opponents.
  7. Coin Flip.

Three-Team (or More) Tie:

Once a team is eliminated from the tie, the tiebreaker procedures restart for the remaining teams. If the three (or more) teams tied can be reduced to two teams, the two-team tiebreaker format will then be applied.

  1. Combined head-to-head winning percentage among the tied teams.
  2. Winning percentage against all in-division opponents for the tied teams.
  3. Head-to-head winning percentage against in-division opponent(s) above the tied teams in rank order.
  4. Head-to-head winning percentage against in-division opponent(s) below the tied teams in rank order.
  5. Combined winning percentage versus all common non-divisional MIAC opponents.
  6. Cumulative winning percentage versus all MIAC opponents.
  7. Coin Flip.

If one or both of the MIAC division champions is ineligible or unable to play in the MIAC Championship Game, then the participant(s) in the MIAC Championship Game shall be determined by the following procedure:

  1. If the ineligible/unable team is tied with one other team for the division championship, then the other team shall be the MIAC Championship Game representative.
  2. If two or more teams are tied with an ineligible/unable team for the division championship, then the ineligible/unable team is removed from the tie and the remaining teams revert to the tie-break procedure. Game results against the ineligible/unable team would remain for tie-breaking purposes unless otherwise noted.
  3. The division runner-up shall be the MIAC Championship Game representative.
  4. If there is a division runner-up tie, then the tied teams shall revert to the tie-break procedure.
  5. If multiple teams are ruled ineligible or unable to compete, the next eligible team will be declared division winner, with tie-breaking procedures being utilized where appropriate.

If the championship game cannot be played due to any reason beyond the control of the MIAC, the two division champions (using divisional tie-breakers as set forth above) shall be declared co-champions and the following procedure will be used to determine the MIAC automatic qualifier to the NCAA Football Playoffs.

  1. Total conference winning percentage (in-division and crossover combined).
    a. Example: The last week of regular season play is canceled due to a snowstorm. Division Champion A was 4-0 in-division and 2-1 in crossover (6-1 in conference). Division Champion B was 2-2 in-division and 2-1 in crossover (4-3 in conference) with a win over Division Champion A. Division Champion A (6-1) should receive NCAA bid over Division Champion B (4-3).
  2. Head-to-head winning percentage between the two tied teams.
  3. Combined winning percentage against all common MIAC opponents.
  4. Team furthest removed from NCAA Playoff participation.
  5. Coin Flip.
